In the summer of 1884, A. P. Sinnett wanted to publish the letters. These letters are known as the Mahatma Letters of Theosophical Society. Sinnett's goal was to prove to critics that the source for his books was real. However, Master K.H. (Higher Entity Koot Hoomi Lal) responded with a message. Master K.H.'s message is significant because it addresses Sinnett's intention.


Higher Entity Koot Hoomi Lal:

When our first correspondence began, There was no intention of publishing anything based on our exchange. You asked questions randomly. I provided answers at different times to these unrelated queries. In a way, I was hesitant to respond, so my answers were imperfect. Sometimes, my responses seemed disjointed because they were written from different perspectives.


Therefore, I must advise against sharing the raw and complicated materials in your possession. These materials are in the form of old letters. I confess that much of the content in these letters was intentionally made obscure (Hidden or concealed: not easily seen or noticed.) Sharing these letters would only create more confusion. Instead of helping yourself or others, it would put you in an even more difficult position. It would also invite criticism of the "Masters." This would hinder human progress and the Theosophical Society. For these reasons, I strongly protest against your idea of sharing these letters. My letters must not be published in the way you're suggesting. However, I do think some of the information in those letters is valuable. Copies of select letters should be sent to the Literary Committee at Adyar. The Committee may be able to use the information in those letters. They can utilize it for their purposes.


To summarize my views, the letters were not written for publication. They were not intended for public comment either. The letters were written for private use. Neither M. (Possibly Higher Entity Morya) nor I (Higher Entity Koot Hoomi) would give our consent to their public release. We would never agree to see the letters handled publicly.


One reason for the letters' limitations is that the Masters typically wrote them in a hurry. As a result, the possibility of error was significant. Master K.H. himself acknowledged this in one of his letters:


Even an adept (soul of higher entity), when acting through their physical body, is not immune to mistakes. These mistakes can occur due to human carelessness. When an adept is not careful, they can appear absurd (hard to believe) to those who don't understand the phenomena. These phenomena include thought-transference and astral precipitations. Simple carelessness can lead to such misunderstandings.

There is always a risk when receiving thoughts and ideas. This risk occurs if one fails to verify the source of the thoughts. Are the thoughts coming from within, or are they being imposed from outside? If one is not careful, external influences can affect their thoughts. This concern was one of the reasons I hesitated to allow my private letters to be printed. Specifically, I excluded a few letters from the series from being printed, while allowing others. I didn't have the time to verify the contents of the letters. Even now, I still haven't had the chance to verify them. I have a habit of quoting from various sources. Often, I quote without using quotation marks. My quotes come from the vast amount of information stored in our Akasic libraries. I can access this information intuitively (vaguely subconscious sense), without needing to visually read it. In a way, you could say I access this knowledge with my eyes shut.

Instead of doing any good thereby to yourself and others it would only place you in a still more difficult position, bring criticism upon the heads of the “Masters” and thus have a retarding influence on human progress and the T.S. Hence I protest most strongly against your new idea. . . My letters must not be published, in the manner you suggest, but . . . copies of some should be sent to the Literary Committee at Adyar . . . [so that it] might be able to utilise the information.

The letters, in short, were not written for publication or public comment upon them, but for private use, and neither M. nor I would ever give our consent to see them thus handled.


One of the reasons for this is that the Masters usually precipitated the letters in a hurry and the possibility of error was great. As Master K.H. wrote in one of his letters:


Even an "adept" when acting in his body is not beyond mistakes due to human carelessness. You now understand that he is as likely as not to make himself look absurd in the eyes of those who have no right understanding of the phenomena of thought-transference and astral precipitations — and all this, thro' lack of simple caution. There is always that danger if one has neglected to ascertain whether the words and sentences rushing into the mind have come all from within or whether some may have been impressed from without. . . . That was one of the reasons why, I had hesitated to give my consent to print my private letters and specifically excluded a few of the series from the prohibition. I had no time to verify their contents — nor have I now. I have a habit of often quoting, minus quotation marks — from the maze of what I get in the countless folios of our Akasic libraries, so to say — with eyes shut.
